What is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing)?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapy that helps your brain process and heal from distressing experiences that feel “stuck.”

Analogies are a great way to understand EMDR and make it much easier to grasp:

  • “Mental wound” analogy:

Just like your body heals a cut, your brain is wired to heal from emotional pain. Sometimes that process gets blocked, and EMDR helps restart it.

  • “Stuck memory” analogy:

It’s like a memory is frozen in time, and your brain keeps reacting as if it’s still happening. EMDR helps update that memory so it feels like something in the past.

During EMDR, we briefly focus on a difficult memory while using gentle back-and-forth stimulation, like eye movements or tapping. This helps your brain reprocess the memory so it becomes less overwhelming.

What does EMDR feel like?
  • You’re awake, aware, and in control

  • You don’t have to go into extreme detail about the trauma

  • Many people notice the memory becomes less intense or distressing over time
